2 · The capital

Funding comes in many forms. Grants are one of them.

AutoDoc matches your organization, projects, and spending against federal and Alaska programs. The job is knowing which of these apply to you before you have to ask.

01

R&D tax credits

Cash from work you are already doing

~$140K

illustrative federal credit on $2M qualifying R&D spend

The federal research credit (IRC §41) can return cash from qualifying product work, software, engineering, process changes, testing, and prototypes. AutoDoc uses about 7% of qualifying spend as an illustrative U.S. estimate (ASC-based). Qualified small businesses may also apply up to $500,000 of eligible research credit against payroll tax each year.

Examples. New products · software · engineering iterations · automation · testing · materials · manufacturing methods · food-processing improvements · energy technology · oilfield technology

02

Innovation funding

Develop technology and keep ownership

$50K to $1.8M

typical SBIR/STTR Phase I and Phase II ranges

America’s Seed Fund invests roughly $4B a year across about 4,000 companies. Typical awards: Phase I $50K to $275K. Phase II $750K to $1.8M. As of April 2026, participating agencies can issue awards without an SBA waiver up to about $323K (Phase I) and $2.15M (Phase II). Alaska has also run a state SBIR/STTR supplement (up to $25K Phase I, up to $100K Phase II). We watch for the next open round.

Examples. AI · software · drones · aerospace · mining tech · energy tech · environmental tech · health tech · marine tech · sensors · robotics · industrial equipment

03

Energy and equipment

Help pay for expensive upgrades

Up to $1M

REAP renewable-energy grants when a grant round is open

USDA REAP is built for eligible rural small businesses and agricultural producers. Renewable-energy grants up to $1M. Energy-efficiency grants up to $500K. Qualifying federal share up to 50%. Grant plus guaranteed loan support up to 75% of eligible cost. Covers HVAC, insulation, lighting, refrigeration, equipment, solar, wind, hydro, and similar systems. Guaranteed loans are open now. Grant rounds open on a cycle. AutoDoc watches the next window.

Examples. HVAC · lighting · refrigeration · insulation · solar · equipment replacement · facility energy systems

04

Workforce funding

Help paying to train your people

50%+

wage reimbursement during qualifying On-the-Job Training

Alaska On-the-Job Training can reimburse employers for part of wages while eligible workers train. State materials describe reimbursement of 50% or more during a qualifying period, depending on the program and the worker. Also watch Incumbent Worker Training, registered apprenticeships, healthcare apprenticeships, and customized training.

Examples. New hires · apprentices · mechanics · technicians · medical assistants · operators · estimators · specialized trades

05

Rural business capital

Expansion, equipment, and working capital

Up to $300K

Alaska Rural Development Initiative Fund, two or more owners

Alaska’s Rural Development Initiative Fund supports eligible businesses in qualifying small communities: up to $150K for one person, up to $300K for two or more. Funds may support startup, expansion, equipment, construction, and other commercial uses, subject to program rules. Alaska also runs programs for commercial fishing, charter fisheries, mariculture, microloans, fisheries enhancement, small-business development, and alternative energy.

Examples. Equipment · expansion · working capital · fishing · mariculture · rural facilities

06

Government contracting

Sometimes the opportunity is revenue

$5.5M / $8.5M

SBA 8(a) sole-source ceilings: most acquisitions / manufacturing

For qualifying small businesses, federal programs can open substantial contract opportunities. Current SBA guidance: qualifying 8(a) businesses may receive sole-source awards up to $5.5M for most acquisitions and $8.5M for manufacturing. Tribal and Alaska Native Corporation-owned 8(a) businesses can receive qualifying sole-source awards above ordinary thresholds, subject to applicable approvals. HUBZone and small-business set-asides are part of the same map.

Examples. Contractors · engineering firms · IT · logistics · manufacturers · security · professional services · Native-owned enterprises

Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, utilities, local governments, Tribes, Alaska Native Corporations, nonprofits, and cooperatives. The opportunity is finding every source of capital that fits your organization.

AutoDoc evaluates them together, ranks what is worth pursuing, and gives you one funding roadmap.

3 · Your business

There is a different funding map for each kind of company.

Tap the type of organization you run. The numbers below are illustrative. Eligibility depends on the entity, the spend, the project, and program rules.

Funding map

Contractor

40 employees · $12M revenue

~$42K

illustrative federal R&D credit on $600K qualifying technical spend

You build things. That can still be a funding map.

What AutoDoc looks for

  • R&D credit on custom engineering, methods, materials, prototypes, and process work
  • Workforce funding for estimators, operators, technicians, apprentices, and new hires
  • Federal contracting pathways where you qualify: 8(a), HUBZone, set-asides
  • Rural financing for equipment or expansion where location rules are met

Five qualifying workers trained at $30/hour for six months can add tens of thousands in wage-reimbursement opportunity, depending on program rules and hours. A qualifying 8(a) contractor can see sole-source opportunities in the millions per contract.

In the room, the conversation is simple. What does the company do. How many people. What are you spending money on this year. Anything you are building, improving, hiring for, or investing in. That is what we map.

4 · The stack

For some Alaska organizations, the numbers get very large.

An ordinary operating company can stack recurring credits with project funding. A qualifying energy project can change the economics of the whole build.
